Cranberry Island's Oral Histories

We are a College of the Atlantic student cohort affiliated with Maine Sound and Story, the Frenchman Bay Oral History project, Mapping Ocean Stories and the Maine Island Trust. Our project is focused on recording the stories of the people living on the Cranberry Isles, the changes they have witnessed on their islands within their lifetimes and how their communities are managing the changes they have and continue to face.

We conducted a series of interviews and asked questions centered around social and ecological change to determine topics of interest on the islands. The interviewees' responses gave us three distinct themes and most were rooted in their communities and community spaces such as the public docks, churches, the Ladies Aid, the Longfellow and Ashley Bryan schools, and the Neighborhood House. For this reason, we chose to create a story map to highlight the changes and themes through physical locations.
